The International Olympic Committee will host the new Youth Olympic Games in Singapore August 14-26 . The event will invite 3600 young athletes, ages fourteen to eighteen and from twenty six different sports to compete for Olympic medals and wrestling trophies. The Games will be held every four years in Winter and Summer events in tandem with the current Olympic Games. One of the sports to be featured is youth wrestling. Fourteen different classes will be divided as five weight classes in men’s freestyle, five in Greco-Roman and four weight classes in women’s freestyle. Greco-Roman wrestling is a style of wrestling that is practiced worldwide. It differs from freestyle wrestling in that it forbids holds below the waist. Both styles have been included in Summer Olympics held since 1908.

Amongst the many trophies and awards for winning in USA Wrestling, one of the most sought after and difficult to win is the Gorriaran Award. The award is a hallmark of the NCAA Division I Championships and has been awarded since 1961 to the college wrestler who has pinned down the most opponents in the least amount of time. Named after the Cuban born wrestling manager, contributor, emblem designer and National Wrestling Hall of Famer, Manny Gorian, the award was founded as the “Heismann Trophy” of wrestling. Last year’s 2009 award was presented to Taylor Hudson of Maryland. In the history of the award, only two wrestlers have earned the award twice. The first was awarded to Don Gable of Iowa State in 1969-70 and the second time to Gary Albright of the University of Nebraska in 1982 and 1986. Keep a watch for this year’s winner at the tournament which typically occurs in March.

World Team climber, Alyssa Lampe of the Women’s Team USA is a mover and shaker these days in the world of women’s wrestling. Currently No. 2 in U.S, and a resident athlete of the US Olympic Training Center in Colorado, she boasts of a strong winter season placing 2nd at the Outstanding Ukrainian Wrestlers Memorial International in Kiev and also earning the bronze medal at the Dave Schultz Memorial International in Colorado. Not only that, she won another bronze earlier this season at the Ivan Yangin memorial Grand Prix in Russia, a gold medal at the New York AC International and another bronze at the Sunkist Kids International Open in Arizona. Her coaches attribute her recent and seemingly nonstop success to her ‘confidence, focus and maturity’. Lampe sets high goals for herself hoping to beat the best wrestlers worldwide. Follow Lampe’s drive and climb up the ladder eventually to the U.S. World Team.
